Installing Clay Nests & Providing Water for Birds
Small actions at home can help protect sparrows and other urban birds. Installing clay nests and keeping water bowls during summer creates safe spaces for birds to rest, drink, and raise their young.
1. How to Install a Clay Sparrow Nest
Ideal Location
• Balcony walls
• Building ledges
• Verandahs
• Under roof shades or eaves
• Trees in gardens (if safe from predators)
Correct Height
Install the nest 7–10 feet above the ground.
This keeps the nest safe from cats, dogs, and human disturbance.
Direction of the Nest Opening
The nest opening should ideally face:
North or East
This protects the nest from direct afternoon sunlight and heavy rain.
How to Fix the Nest
You can fix the clay nest using:
• Strong wire
• Nylon rope
• Metal hook or screw
Make sure:
✔ The nest is stable and does not swing
✔ The entrance hole remains clear and open
✔ It is not exposed to direct rain
Important Tips
• Do not disturb the nest once birds start using it.
• Avoid placing nests near noisy areas.
• Do not place the nest in direct sunlight.
2. How to Place Water Bowls for Birds
Providing water during summer helps birds survive extreme heat.
Best Locations
Place bowls in:
• Balconies
• Terrace corners
• Garden areas
• Window ledges
• Shaded outdoor spaces
Keep the Bowl in Shade
Always place the bowl in a shaded location so the water stays cool.
Avoid placing bowls in direct sunlight.
Bowl Type
Use:
• Clay bowl (best option)
• Earthen pot plate
• Wide shallow dish
Depth should be 2–3 inches only.
This makes it safe for small birds.
Water Maintenance
• Change water every day
• Clean the bowl regularly
• Refill water during very hot days
Extra Tip
Add small stones or pebbles inside the bowl so birds can stand safely while drinking.
3. Encourage Birds to Visit
You can also:
• Grow native plants in balconies or gardens
• Avoid chemical pesticides
• Maintain a quiet and safe environment
• Spread awareness in your community
